HOW TO HELP
One of the best actions you can take in this scenario, is checking in with your friend and letting her know you are on her side and always willing to listen. It is also important to be vocal against transphobia, and push for policies that protect trans people.
We all have a collective responsibility to unpack and dissect our underlining biases regarding race and understand why we have them in the first place. It starts by having that tough conversation.
How racial discrimination plays out in online dating
In 2015, 20% transgender and gender diverse individuals in Ontario "had been physically or sexually assaulted for being trans, and another 34% had been verbally threatened or harassed but not assaulted”. While statistic for trans and gender diverse folks are limited in Canada, the erasure of people's identities can lead to serious harm.

Covid-19 and Reporting Assault
Regardless of pandemic restrictions, assault is never your fault. While the meeting between two individuals may have been consensual, the assault and violence was not. Try to help your friend realize that they were the one harmed and violated. Listen to your friend, believe them, and reassure them that it wasn’t their fault. Let them know about resources that are available to them on campus and in the community. Support them in making choices that are right for them.

Consent is Always Mandatory ... Assuming sexual intentions, and advancing on that assumption is predatory behaviour.
Meeting up with someone in person during COVID is not automatic consent for getting closer physically. Respect peoples boundaries and always seek enthusiastic ongoing consent.

Sexual Exploitation for Personal Gain
“It is important to know your tenant rights in Ontario. If you are confident you have the ability to file a complaint, do so with the Housing Tribunal, The Canadian Human Rights Commission or the Landlord and Tenant Board. This is form of sexual harassment is not okay; it is understandable that you may feel fearful of getting evicted, but remember a landlord cannot evict someone without just cause.”
